Unit 1: Ropes and Knots

We love playing with ropes in the woods! Over the years we have increasingly brought in hammocks, nets, different types of swings, balanced on ‘slack lines’, built bridges, ladders, pulley’s and spider webs!

Please find below some key documents that will support your practice – remember to think about how you look after your equipment, follow all the important risk assessments to check your ropes are safe and the trees in good health!

The first video of this module gives you guidance about different kinds of ropes to use and how you can both check and look after your ropes. When ropes are going to be needed to carry weight, it’s essential that they are checked before they are used.

With all the possible equipment you may be using with your groups, getting into good practice about putting the ropes away properly, makes a huge difference to easy storage and easy use. It can take a whole session to untangle a rope – sometimes that may be just right, but others definitely not! If the children have the ability, encourage them to put the ropes away as well!
