Unit 2: Overview

he aim of Unit 2 is that you will gain knowledge of the benefits of woodlands, their structures and management. This Unit encourages you to get to know the woodland ecosystem and to understand the role that humans play in supporting it’s health and regeneration.

As with all our practice, we are trying to involve the young people as much as possible. To think about how we could for example encourage more diversity, plant species so that we both have resources for Forest School, and increase food and shelter for birds, mammals and reptiles.

In your own time, start to get to know the plants and trees around you and find out what their habitat is, what medicines they may be associated with, food and materials. It’s especially important to know if you the land you are working on has any poisonous or protected plants or dangerous creatures! We want to leave the Forest School spaces better than we found it. Humans have a huge impact on natural spaces, so consider how you will take care of the space, perhaps rotating your main site over time.

As with all Units, please read the ITC Learning Outcomes overview so you are fully aware of what the Unit covers, and download your Unit 2 workbook which will be assessed when you send it in!
