Unit 1: Shelters

Shelter building is always happening at Forest School! From tiny ‘fairy’ shelters to survival shelters to sleep the night inside, they are part of a life well lived! Den building can come in any shape of form initiated by a young person – who may want to return to this on a weekly basis as their ‘home’ or ‘base’. This can be problematic if you are working on a public site and if you want to keep the site as ‘natural’ as possible.

Follow all your risk assessments, thinking about if the health of the wood being used, if you intend children inside it, and consider bringing in knots if the children’s play may benefit.

This video will show you the process of using key knots to help you put up a small tarpaulin shelter. It’s useful to buy a tarpaulin that has eyelets so you can tie on paracord.

Remember that giving children tarpaulins to play with is always a first step in them choosing what they want to do with the material.

Unless the weather requires you to have a more sturdy shelter, it’s wonderful to observe how the children work out how to tie knots and put the material up themselves!
